Hey folks:

Sheesh, this thread got a little bit out of control. But nobody
complained, on or off list, until today, and nobody unsubscribed, so I just let it
go. It happens every five years or so, and I don't see anything wrong with
it as there were some very pent-up emotions from quite a few folks. And
while I don't agree with everything that was said, there is some good to be
had in letting folks get things off their chests. Apologies to those on the
list who found this to be noise.

My thoughts (which may ruffle feathers, and is, of course, only my
opinion):
- I am getting old too, and yes, there is age discrimination, and crappy
or no pensions in the tech fields.
- I feel the financial pressures that many of our members feel.

- But, not all young folks are idiots, so Christian, don't take it
personally -- your posts have been valuable.
- I was (er, we were) young folks too, and back then I /we probably
thought we were one of the "good ones."
- Canada does not take our jobs. Canada invests a lot of money here. But
it is so frickin' cold there.

- FYI, I was born in Canada, and came here when I was 13 -- though I am
now a US citizen and will die here.

- A lot of our jobs went away since it did not make sense to pay
doctor-salaries to fender-installers.
- Times change, and we may not like it, but the only thing to do is adapt.
- Yes, product/service quality sucks today, but it is getting better IMHO.
 The pendulum keeps swinging.
- I finally got rid of my Centurylink business phone line-- in over ten
years they NEVER got rid of hum problems
and I had them swap pairs every frickin' year. (the old POTS days are
gone)
- Instead of $50/mo for a phone line, I pay $10/mo for virtualpbx, and
have a very full-featured auto-attendant
and each extension can be any line I want (my cell). It has been
flawless. Every now and then there is
a little delay in the call, which is annoying, but not often, and no HUM.

We are all big boys here on greenkeys and we (mostly) all know each other,
and most of us go back over a decade or more on the list. >>> And I sure
don't want to hear from some brand-new member about qst policy and how we
can't say shit/fuck/piss or any other words on George Carlin's list. It
happens here VERY-infrequently, and has never been a problem. Look at the
archives and you will see that this is a list dedicated to teletype-related
conversations, rtty info, has a collection of very interesting people from
repairmen to military-personel to weather station folk to new young folks who
find the equipment fascinating -- and I must say that our mission, in
addition to saving some good info in the archive so someone a hundred years
from now might be able to get an M15 running and get a big shit-eating-grin on
his face, is to pass the knowledge on.

So let's all lighten up an move on with tty stuff.

No group is complete without a critic-in-chief. ;-)

There will always be some side discussions related to common interests of
the
group members.

But, I've seen groups where it is very tightly controlled; they tend to be
dull
and hardly ever have traffic, and when someone posts, it is usually of the
form
"I'm not sure if I can ask this question here..."
