[GreenKeys] Teletype stuff

Thanks for the reply and subscribing me to the greenkeys email list. Chicken punch is what we used to call them, but perhaps toe punch is more correct. Here is a link to how it is used in the chicken breeding world.

It would be interesting if there were some of the old Missouri Pacific RR teletype operators still around. I worked on the extra board in Nebraska, Kansas, and Missouri. Perhaps there is someone in the greenkeys group.

Again thanks for your reply,

Jim Bailey

  Hi Jim:

Thanks for dropping a note. Always great to hear from someone who formerly worked with tty gear. I made a rather presumptuous move in subscribing you to the greenkeys email list. I think you will find some new friends on our little list (465 members worldwide today, btw). The email traffic is reasonably light most of the time, and I'll bet you will enjoy it. If not, just let me know and I will un-subscribe you at any time.

Have not heard the term "chicken punch" before, but I am guessing that you are referring to the stapler-like thingy with the knob on top for tape repair -- yeah, I happen to have one of those -- sitting on a shelf somewhere between a little stash of intel 4004 chips and a clump of nixie tubes. And yes, I still have a bunch of crap.

  thanks,

  gil

I worked at the Mopac RR back in the early 60's using the old baudot tape perforators, readers, etc. I also remember having a little chicken punch (we called em) to use to correct tape by punching an additional hole, etc. Are you familiar with this little punch? Later I was a teletype operator in the Navy in Bremerhaven Germany 1970-72. Thanks for posting the old pictures of the equipment. Do you still have a bunch of crap?

    Jim Bailey
