Tower climbing. I've been on one tower, a ninety foot
self supporting tower for an FM station. This is not
particularly high as towers go but it was on top of Mount
Wilson on a cloudy day and looked to be about a couple of
thousand feet high. I once talked to some riggers working
on a local AM station. Not very high towers, I think less
than 300 feet. I asked about KFI, who at the time still had
their 775 foot tower, Oh, he said, we don't to towers like
that. Evidently there are specialists. KFI's was knocked
down by a small plane a few years ago and replaced with a
650 foot tower with a top hat. Tallest tower locally is
KCBS-TV, just shy of 1000 feet plus its on Mount Wilson,
sort of. Its the only tower there that is required to be
painted and lighted. I will stay on the ground, thank you.
