Meaghan,
Cory is correct. The vinyl tubing is 7/16 OD and 5/16 ID, cut to 7/8 inch long. The 32 is likely 60 MA loop so it wont hook to any late computers without an adapter.

Hi Meaghan,
That's a very nice Model 32. It's a 5 level machine and probably runs at 66WPM which means it's limited to talking to other 66WPM teletypes, or if you get creative, you could build a current loop and use a converter and software to interface it to your PC. Before you proceed with plugging it in, check the rubber "hammer" that strikes the type cylinder. Most of these have turned to goo and if yours hasn't already, it's only a matter of time. The usual solution is to replace this with a short piece of vinyl tubing. I've been running a 32 this way with excellent results.
Once that's been verified/replaced you should be able to partially rotate the phone dial and stop the machine from running "open". Now you can play around with printing, punching and reading tape. -Cory

Hi Everyone!
I recently acquired a Teletype machine and I have been doing a little bit of research to learn more about it, and I found this newsgroup. If anyone would like to share their expertise, I would certainly appreciate it! From what I understand, assuming the machine is still in operable condition, I could hook it up to some sort of modified computer terminal and have it send and receive messages. Has anyone tried this? I know that I may have gone down the rabbit hole a bit with this, but I love that people are repurposing 40+ year old technology. Thanks in advance for your help!
