Out of curiosity, I removed the series RC snubber entirely and replaced
it with just a reversed diode, like a 1N4007, across the selector magnet.

Yes, it does nicely to clamp things, but.... Boy does it destroy the current
waveform through the selector magnet.

I'd guess from the lower holding current requirement of selector magnet,
it's adding between 5-10 mS of Spacing distortion.
