Good and informative discussion.
On model 32 and 33's I believe there are two stop bits when sending from the TTY. At least it looks that way on the distributor stop segment length.
Another interesting fact is that some 33's will operate in receive mode on one stop bit and some others wont. My test generator allows you to choose either length. I assume its due to mainshaft turning easily or not and the condition of the selector clutch shoes. Also the motor belt tension.
When sending from a 33 the tape reader is a parallel device that feeds the distributor which is a serial device. The tape reader magnet energizes and the distributor reads the pins that go thru the tape holes as a mark and the ones blocked as a space. Then the magnet releases and the reader advances for the next character. The double stop bit on the distributor may be there to allow the tape time to advance. Its only the springs on the armature release that do the advancing.
The keyboard and answerback also operate as parallel devices. The TR, AB and KYBD contacts all feed the distributor segments.
