[GreenKeys] Friedrichshafen/Germany hamfest report

To the Group:

Two weeks ago, our international group of teleprinter enthusiasts presented
the first public demonstration of the TelexPhone / i-Telex project. This
demonstration took place at Europe's largest hamfest at Friedrichshafen, by
Lake Constance in Germany. This event is Europe's "Dayton" and was attended
by around 15,000 people.

The TelexPhone / i-Telex project allows teleprinters to be connected
together across ordinary phone lines or over the internet. Our group's
display was adjacent to that of our friends at the Cryptomuseum.com. It
consisted of an East German RFT T51 (Siemens T37 clone) and a "modern"
electronic Siemens T1000 connected to the internet via our i-Telex system.

On the second day, Riccardo IZ4ZAX arrived from Italy with an Olivetti
TE550E. Using a TelexPhone / i-Telex unit we were connected to Richard in
Brisbane Australia. For internet access we simply used a router with a 3G
internet stick. A number of enthusiastic visitors were able to have a
reliable, error free Telex chat with Richard who also has a matching
TelexPhone unit at his home that is connected directly to a spare ethernet
port on his router.

Many of the visitors were surprised to see such nice examples of old
technology clattering away again. Many recounted their own old teleprinter
stories. Many were happy to see the link between old and modern technology,
which allows us to keep this historic communications technology alive. We
were very pleased when we recruited a new member on to the network and are
confident many more will follow.
