I had good results using my local [well, 50 miles away in the nearest
city] copy shop to scan oversize drawings. The only glitch was that
since the originals were black-and-white they defaulted to scanning
in "black and white." For this, that meant bi-level. Even 600dpi
produced unreadable copies when scanned bi-level. You need to have them
scan it greyscale, at least.

The other thought I'd have would be to consider the condition of
the drawing. My understanding is that these scanners are basically
a bit like pen-plotters in reverse, rolling the drawing under a
line where the scanning happens. If it was fragile, that could
be a problem.
