Ralph and others ...
- I will do a tracing of the rack here. We have found one in the stash
so far.
I grappled some quick photos while at the warehouse ( cold there!) and
will try to get over and look though all the stuff that just came in
from even a
colder part of the country!
- if you want something that is factory look alike this trace of
profile i do will help
if you want something that works and paper something can be bent up
to fit the holes in the winder blindly without drawings. ( I like
things to look factoryish though!)
-The spring is a harder material thus would get less wear over a long
period of time
than the softer steel.
- the most oddest part of the creation is the side profile needs the
tracing the most looks like this
(photo will not come though in digest mode... only for people that
directly get it.)
- we are still looking for the core reel parts to put in our winder
- figure out who needs the tracing and get address to me. in when i
get some more time
will shoot photo with camera and post on SMECC site
- in the event we find there is a case lot of these display racks here
some will be shared but as to date with only one in existence here
it stays in the building. In reality - I would assume since are 2
winders there may be at best 2 racks... but with the way people loose stuff?
this one may be the only!
Good teletyping to all
ed sharpe archivist for smecc _www.smecc.org_ (http://www.smecc.org)
the spring!
this is the most important profile to trace out

First off, I mis-identified the name of the device. It is called a
"Display Rack", and not
a 'Bail'. There is another item which is part of the overall Paper Winder
which is called
a Bail. I apologize for any confusion.
The actual Bail is a pivoting item that the paper rides under, and when it
gets tight, the
bail operates a switch to turn off the power to the Winder's motor. I have
seen references
to 'mercury switches' and a rendering of one in one website. I have two
Winders with no
Display Rack and have not had them apart to see if mine have the mercury
switch as opposed
to maybe some sort of micro switch that could do the same job.
I got feedback from several GreenKeys people after the initial posting. I
appreciate the
Replies. One party is in the process of locating proper materials for
fabrication. I will
guess if he and his son find the materials and a straightforward method of
making the Racks
that this info will show up on GreenKeys in the future. They might
appreciate some feedback
from interested parties as an indication of how many items might be needed
in the long haul.

I tested the holes in my Winder and discovered that the larger, top holes
can just barely
pass a 1/4" drill, so 1/4" stock would probably work just fine; the bottom
holes which give
support and stability to the Rack pass a 5/32" drill, but if this ended up
as 1/8" it would
work just fine.
The top of the Rack has what appears to be a coil spring, which acts as a
roller for the paper
as it passes over it. I don't know how important this is. If the material
has a smooth enough
surface, the 'roller' may not be necessary. And, even with low pressure,
the paper passing over
the Rack will eventually give some part of it a 'polish'. (It might take
a hundred rolls, but
in the long run, the surface will be altered.)
Thanks to all who took the time to reply off-list and several on the
Reflector.

Ralph - W8ROI
