Hey Gang,
Hope the TTY Art went well today Tom, but I missed out on it as I was doing
a demo at an Amateur Radio event called TechFest 2013.
If you've got the time you can look at this YouTube video from TechFest 2012
to see what it is all about:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKNgpo4WCIs
If you watch it at least up to 7:48 you'll find me with my TT98 and
HeavyMetal running for last year's demo.
This year's demo was entitled "A Marriage of Old and New Technology -- The
Original Text Machine."
Thanks to John Nagle and his BaudotRSS software and his RS232 to current
loop converter, the TT-98 stole the show.
Our display was constantly covered up by old hands that exclaimed "Wow, I
remember those" and young children that just stood wide eyed and opened
mouth at the machine with all the moving parts. And there were many, many
comments to the effect that it was great to see that these machines were
being preserved and shown to folks that had no idea of their existence.
While the display of current news items from Reuters was well received, the
biggest hit was the sending and receiving of text messages. The young
crowd especially was very excited about being able to send a text message to
one of their friends or parents and then get the reply to their text right
back on the printer. Many of them walked away with a canary yellow piece of
paper as a souvenir of their experience. There was an abundance of
"Awesome" and "Cool" and "Hey Dude you've got to see this!" All in all it
was a fantastic experience even for the old dude putting on the show.
I didn't really keep a count, but I would say probably between 80 to 100
text messages were sent and received.
And I was asked to be sure and do something like it again next year. Maybe
Tom will be sending TTY Art next year and I can punch tapes for the
attendees. But we'll have to disconnect when Bat Girl comes across. :-)
I'd like to thank all of the GreenKeys group because in some respects you
have all helped with the demo that was done today.
