Gil - tung oil spun into the surface and polished is wonderful!
I made some replicas of Bell's early telephone butter stamp style
receivers one time on the wood lathe and that is the way I applied finish
to them also. I have the variable speed Rockwell so I just lean on
the lever and speed 'er up and apply the finish!
on the laser and toner printing sticking... in reality any type of
plastic document protector this can happen to also... the toner is
heat setting and if it gets warm.... ecch it is stuck to the clear
surface....

Chemical reactions don't even take that long sometimes. I had a vinyl
placemat on my nightstand for just a couple of years (dusting around it and
never moving it; yeah, that's lazy). It reacted with the varnish and the
imprint is still there. I learned that day how nasty vinyl can be, and then
recalled how laser printed sheets would transfer to the inside of vinyl
binders. A plastic to be used carefully. A nice cherry nightstand top needs
refinishing now.
Speaking of wood finishing, and vastly off-topic, my 12-yo son wanted to
make a Harry Potter wand for his kinect game, so we spent a fun afternoon
turning one down on the lathe. We used tung oil to finish, and after 5 coats
(with steel-wool polishing after each), it is as smooth a a baby's behind.
Great stuff that tung oil.
