Hi Ed:
Sheesh, I have a 31 just like that one. It was the first teletype machine I got, way back in the late 70s. It sat in my dad's shed for many years as I moved from place to place. When I finally retrieved it about ten years ago, I started looking online for some info. I found this group called "greenkeys," joined up, and with some help from Jack and Jim and Don and George (and others I may be forgetting at the moment; sorry), got the little beast printing -- it was very, very cool. I had an ear-to-ear grin for days. I have been collecting teletype machines ever since. I will have to dig the 33 out and look, but I think it had a black-can-tube thingy as well, which turned out to be a heater for cold weather pre-heat or something. I disconnected it as I generally do with stuff that gets hot. I am not sure about an actual tube circuit, but then I am pretty sure mine has a sync motor for 115ac, and I am not sure what a governed motor unit would use.
I got another 31 from Jack years ago -- it is not a WU version, but a black crinkle Teletype-branded unit with a different cover that does not cover the keyboard. Also a very special machine to me. Also working. These were Teletype's smallest KSR printers (followed probably by the 28KSR in the skin-tight chassis). When I am older and thinning out my stuff, I expect the 31s will be the last to stay with me.
I too am curious what can be done to clean up the keys on these guys (and on some 28s). After the discussion about cleaning 33 cases I am still not sure. Wayne seemed to have good luck with just chlorine bleach, but as someone pointed out, who knows what time-bomb latent chemical reactions may be started with, well, any chemical. It would be a drag to find out in a decade or two that the plastic turns to dust when you touch it.
Then there was that stuff the computer collectors use, retro-bright, or resto-bung, or repro-douce, or something like that. Dunno whether that is a safer alternative or not. Plastic is pretty porous stuff, and I presume it can retain cleaning-solution molecules in lots of nooks and crannies. Molecules that could slowly start some other reaction over time. It would really take a chemical engineering sort of fellow to tell us for sure whether we could confidently do a clean/neutralize/wash cycle and be sure we were not leaving some nasty residue behind.
Anyway, great little 31 you got there Ed.
You still want that WU 103 and its giant mailbox chassis? I'd be happy to haul it to the other side of town for you -- it'll just cost you a tour of your museum.
