Chris asks:
>But how did they get the data (ie, the loop) to and from the unit at
>the stadiums? Was every stadium wired with a circuit to somewhere?

It may not be entirely relevant, but one of the photographs in the
article in which the Teletypesetter was introduced in the popular
press shows a view of the press at what would seem to be a boxing
match. On the front bench are three radio announcers. Behind
them, though, are several *telegraph* operators with keys and relays.
This was 1929.

There's no chance a direct link will make it through here, but to see
it go to the Google Books' Advanced Search page:

http://books.google.com/advanced_book_search

In the "Title" field put: Popular Science
In the keyword search field, put: Teletypesetter

You should get the March, 1929 issue of Popular Science. Go to p. 23.
Article title: "Setting the Type by Wire!"
