This and a few other variations were extremely popular when I was in the 
Air Force forty plus years ago. Model 15 and 19s were the most animated, 
but the Teletype maintainance guys did not like the practice. Most 
officers got a laugh out of it, but the career NCOs (especially if they 
were socially conservative) yelled at us. They claimed it put a lot of 
stress on the shift mechanism if you sent figs-ltrs-figs-ltrs 
immediately after each other.
  Under pressure they would admit there was no issue if you sent a space 
or paused a moment between figs-ltrs.
