Jack, Nick, Gerry, and all you GreenKeyers out there in Teletype
land- - -
In response to the posting from Gerry Block and Nick England, all I
can say is regard Harbor Freight tools with a bit of skepticism.
The pump in my Fish Pond is a Harbor Freight item, and it has
performed flawlessly running 24/7 for the past seven years. But it
was made in Italy, not Hung-Chow, China.
Incidentally, "Hung-Chow" I believe is the Chinese word for
Constipation.
The hardened deepwell socket set used with the air impact wrench is
superb.
Most of the screwdrivers suck.
The vises they sell are soft enough to use for pillows for robots.
My little arbor press that I use for installing clinch nuts is plain
wonderful.
I have an Austrian-made EMCO semi-jewelers lathe that works fine for
some things, but inasmuch as the motor resembles a beefed-up
phonograph motor, I will never be able to hog off stainless steel
with it. This is partially due to the wierd vacuum cleaner/large
O-ring belts that couple all that horsepower into the chuck. In
fact, the motors that drove the Rek-O-Kut/Collins/Gates Radio
broadcast turntables for lo those many years are a bit more
substantial.
But, it DOES beat a file turning a nail chucked into a Taiwanese
Drill Press.
Last year I made a shaft for one of those dual head bases using the
EMCO. It came out just fine. Not perfect, as I do not have a decent
milling machine with which to drill and tap the 6-40 screw holes
that hold the hub and the gear on, but it IS serviceable.
A three foot length of centerless ground rod cost $5.23. Actually,
it is drill rod, so if I want to heat it red and drop it in a pool
of old crankcase oil, it would be harder than billy-hell.
Now, regarding the Semi-AUTODIN ASR, beauty is in the eye of the
beholder. 600 clams is a lot of money for a NEW 28 ASR still in the
crate!. And if you did obtain the eBay SPESHUL at that stated price,
shipping and handling to San Diego country would merit your going
out and buying a Gold-plated pedestal for it.
Now on the other hand, I have heard that Grizzly Tools here in
Washington has some pretty spiffy Off-shore lathes......
Bottom line??? Whatever feels right to you IS RIGHT FOR YOU!!!!!
The eBay machine is a bit nicer than a sow's ear, but I suspect the
silk purse you envision it to be would be somewhat pricey to rebuild
it into.
Been there, Done that!! And I have an ASR T-shirt that is full of
bleach holes to prove it!!
