A synchronous motor might run hot and without sufficient torque at
speeds for which it wasn't designed.
If the machine was geared at 100 and you tried to run it at 60, that's
40% off spec...could be electrical trouble (hot) and could be mechanical
trouble (decoding bursts of characters interspersed with idle might not
be reliable when the motor load changes suddenly.)
"I'm speculating"...I've never designed a synchronous motor, but I did
take the course in school!
