Gosh, Don, right now has got to be a really great time for kit building. No, I'm being to conservative. It is absolutely the greatest time for building, EVER !
And the people I talk to who do actually appreciate the pleasure you can have from electronic construction absolutely agree. I, personally, find myself acquiring kits at a pace of nearly one per week! And there is some of the "neatest" and most interesting stuff now available in kit form.
And that extends over sixty years. I think I started with the AT-1 amateur transmitter, went through hi-fi and stereo, test equipment and more than a few terminal units. But after a couple of TV sets I began to realize that perhaps the Asians could build and sell those cheaper than Heath Co.
Today things are different. I might know a bit more and I know that a smart tweezers and a bunch of signal generators and a Tektronix scope or two does help a lot. But in the past two weeks a 600 meter transceiver and a software defined receiver have arrived. While I do have what some would call a surface mount rework station I have to come to grips with the fact that those eyes of mine with plastic lenses and the beginning of glaucoma make purchase of kits with SMT already built a lot easier.
But this stuff is as much fun today as it was several decades ago.....
