Hey guys,
Made more progress on the M15 the past week...

I got the typing unit stripped down about as far as I probably need to... Got the main shaft out and ready to go.

Really glad I pulled it...there was 50 something year old grease in the bearings that was really nasty. They barely turned. I stripped the shaft down about half way and cleaned it up really well. I flushed the bearings out really well with brake cleaner and repacked them with high temp wheel bearing grease. Nice and smooth now :). The thrust bearing got Moly 60 grease. The shaft should be all ready to go. Also removed the roller bearings on the bail and put all the needles and washers in the cleaning machine (one was actually frozen). Got everything in the lower half of the TU lubed...I'll get the upper end done and put the main shaft back in.

Also got the base painted finally... I used two applications of paint stripper and a fairly aggressive scotch brite disk to strip the old paint. That's some tough paint! I figured whatever survived all that would make a fine base for painting on. Here it is after stripping:

I got it painted last night...looks pretty good. It's a pretty decent match to the original paint on the keyboard unit. I'll take a picture of it tonight. I baked it for a couple of hours, so it should be pretty tough. Going to start the re-wire next :)

Actually, quick question about that--how were the ends of the wires finished originally? On the fuse block they have to be screwed down...did they use a connector of some sort or just wrap the wires around the screws? I'm trying to remember, but I think the rest of the wiring is just soldered to terminal blocks... Hope my iron is powerful enough lol. All I have is one of those cheap Radio Shack units I got years ago. It's been fine for lots of small jobs, so hopefully it works here.
