Here's a chart showing the keying of "eyeball" characters on tape
for 6-level Teletypesetter code:

Question:  Are there names for this other than "eyeball characters"?


... all of which is also a sneaky way of noting that there is another
Teletypesetter document online now.  Just scroll up the page a bit on the
first link above.  It's "The Linotype Handbook for Teletypesetter
Operation."  Despite its name, it isn't a keyboard operation manual.
Rather, it is a "semi-technical" executive-level overview of the
Teletypesetter as a system - Mergenthaler trying to sell it to
newspaper management, mostly.  It has some good, if conventional,
illustrations of the basic TTS components.
