Here's a chart showing the keying of "eyeball" characters on tape
for 6-level Teletypesetter code:
<http://www.circuitousroot.com/artifice/letters/press/compline/literature/linotype/sales/general/index.html#eyeball-chart>
If that long URL doesn't survive transit, here's a temporary copy
at a shorter address:
<www.galleyrack.com/temp/6eyes.pdf>
Question: Are there names for this other than "eyeball characters"?
... all of which is also a sneaky way of noting that there is another
Teletypesetter document online now. Just scroll up the page a bit on the
first link above. It's "The Linotype Handbook for Teletypesetter
Operation." Despite its name, it isn't a keyboard operation manual.
Rather, it is a "semi-technical" executive-level overview of the
Teletypesetter as a system - Mergenthaler trying to sell it to
newspaper management, mostly. It has some good, if conventional,
illustrations of the basic TTS components.
