"much more difficult problem, of needing to convert the raw TTY traffic
into telnet"
I can't see why this is difficult. If your TTY speaks RS2323 then plug
it into any Linux box and you should have a console session, login and
telnet to a local or remote Hercules. I haven't tried it with a TTY but
I have used a Televideo "green screen" with TN3270 onto MTS and that
works. The Raspberry PI would probably be good for this. It has a serial
port but its LV-TTL (3.3Volt) so you need a converter. For RS232 you can
buy cables with RS232 converters in the D-Type for a few dollars on
e-bay. For current loop you can build a daughter board to drive the
loop. Something like the ST-5 interfaces but I guess you only need 20MA.
The sad thing is that whilst MTS is available the tools to re-configure
it for TTY support are not included. However the free VM/370 already has
at least one TTY port configured. It also has some IBM3101 ports (an IBM
serial terminal) which can also be accessed by line mode TTY and should
work with a real TTY.
I have used it with a "green screen" terminal and TN3270. If any one is
interested I will have a look at zapping the tables, which I will
probably try at some point as I want to run APL into a real golfball
terminal. A few things are stopping me , such as zapping the tables, the
need to collect the terminal from the other side of the UK, and no
interface to a PC. (its well more complex as I don't have some parts ....)

P.S. I am currently working on getting the 5-level Creed equipment which
formerly connected to the Pegasus at MOSI (www.mosi.org.uk) running.
