The typing reperf and motor appear to be from a different era than the
keyboard. The nameplate on the keyboard says "Morkrum - Kleinschmidt"
and that company came into being in 1925. M-K changed its name to
"Teletype Corp." in 1928. These two dates establish the date of manufacture
of the keyboard. The reason that I believe the typing reperf and motor
are not from the 1925 - 1928 era is the presence of an inspector's
stamp on the motor. Look at the second picture. There is a guard which
attaches underneath the motor data plate. The guard is there to keep
fingers out of the path of the main bail. There is an orange winged
stamp on the guard of the type used by the military. The stamp suggests
that the typing reperf and motor were purchased by the military. Also,
look at the selector magnets. They are not covered with the varnished
fabric of the era. They have a covering of a more modern material. I
would guess that the typing reperf portion of this machine is from the
50s.
Another issue is the lack of a character counter on the unit. Counters
were typically found under the right side ribbon advance mechanism.
They could also be mounted on the keyboard. (John Nagle was kind
enough to send me some pictures of a keyboard mounted counter.) There
are going to be operating problems if a keyboard typing reperforator
without a character counter is sending to a page printer. I believe
that this machine is not a factory configuration.
It appears that the strip printer that originally came with the M-K
keyboard base was replaced with a typing reperforator of later manufacture.
This was an easy swap to do. (Now, what happened to that factory stock
strip printer?)
