History[_edit_
(http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Automatic_Data_Processing&action=edit§ion=1) ]
In 1949 _Henry Taub_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Taub) founded
Automatic Payrolls, Inc. as a manual payroll processing business with his
brother Joe Taub. _Frank Lautenberg_
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Lautenberg) joined the brothers in the company's infancy. In 1952, Lautenberg
became Chairman and CEO of the company. In 1957, the company changed its
name to Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (ADP), and began using punched card
machines, check printing machines, and mainframe computers._[4]_
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_Data_Processing#cite_note-4) ADP went public in
1961 with 300 clients, 125 employees and revenues of approximately
$400,000. The company established a subsidiary in the United Kingdom in 1965 and
acquired the pioneering online computer services company, Time Sharing
Limited (TSL) in 1974. Lautenberg continued in his roles as Chairman and CEO
until elected to the _United States Senate_
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Senate) from New Jersey in 1982.
>From 1985 onward, ADP’s annual revenues exceeded the $1 billion mark, with
paychecks processed for about 10% of the U.S. workforce. In the 1990s ADP
began acting as a _professional employer organization_
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Professional_employer_organization) (PEO). Around this time, the
company acquired Autonom, a German company, Kerridge Computer Co. Ltd., a
dealer management systems (DMS) provider to auto dealers in the UK, and the
payroll and human resource services company, GSI, headquartered in _Paris_
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris) .
In September 1998, ADP acquired UK-based _Chessington Computer Centre_
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chessington_Computer_Centre) that supplied
administration services to the _UK Government_
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UK_Government) ._[5]_
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_Data_Processing#cite_note-5)
In 2007, the ADP Brokerage Service Group was spun off to form _Broadridge
Financial Solutions_
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadridge_Financial_Solutions) , Inc. (_NYSE_
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_Stock_Exchange) : _BR_ (http://www.nyse.com/about/listed/lcddata.html?ticker=br) ),
removing about $2 billion from ADP's total yearly revenue._[6]_
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_Data_Processing#cite_note-Automatic_Data_Processing-Ma
rch-2007-8-K-6) ADP distributed one share of Broadridge common stock for
every four shares of ADP common stock held by shareholders of record as of
the close of business on March 23, 2007._[7]_
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_Data_Processing#cite_note-Automatic_Data_Processing-April-2007-8-K-

ADP is sponsor of the _ADP National Employment Report_
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ADP_National_Employment_Report) as well as the ADP Small
Business Report.

(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_Data_Processing#cite_note-8) In 2010, ADP acquired the automotive marketing company _Cobalt_
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cobalt) ._[9]_
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_Data_Processing#cite_note-9)
