UP CLOSE TO YOUR NOSE YOU CAN USUALLY SMELL THE OIL UNLESS THE TAPE
HAS DRIED OUT.
MANY OF THE MANUFACTURERS PUT THE TAPE IN A BAG IN THE BOX OR LINED
THE BOX WITH A SEAL COATING.
ANOTHER SOLUTION IS TO SPRAY BOTH SIDES OF THE ROLL WITH A MIST OF
LIGHT WEIGHT OIL AND PUT IT IN A PLASTIC BAG FOR AT LEAST A WEEK.

Is it right that I should really use some kind of oiled paper tape for
my Model 33. I seem to remember when I used a Model 33 back in the 70s
the paper tape was not oiled. The only paper tape I have is not oiled
as far as I can tell, never having encountered oiled paper tape (as
far as I know) I am not quite sure what it is like.
