Thanks to all for the reply.
I do remember the patch panels and that we did quite a bit of patching
but never saw an ASR or KSR with the two feeds. We just patched the
reperf into the ckt as needed like you say.

Having two signal feeds on the 28ASR lets you maintain RTTY comms on the printer side and still copy off the incoming to tape. Think about your old radio panels and you'll remember.
