With mediawiki, no coding is required. There's a rich community of
add-ons for special needs, but I have only used a few things. It does
require a little knowledge to get things setup initially, but it's not
particularly hard and doesn't involve coding.

I think wordpress is good for a stream of news items, but the wiki is
better for a reference. The two can complement each other. For
instance, when you have news about an event, a blog framework like
wordpress is better. When you write a reference article on a
particular teletype, then a wiki is better IMO.
However, a wiki is free form enough that there's no reason you can't
have a stream of news on the main page and have user pages, discussion
areas, etc. The wiki discussion mechanism is a little more involved
than your typical mailing list or web forum, however.
Also, there's no reason you can't try things one way and then switch
later if it's not a good fit.
