I've seen those. You'll note the machine is Western Union, and
Western Union operated Telex in the U.S. Answerback has long been
a feature of Telex. My guess is that the mechanism was made by
Lorenz for Telex in Germany, and W.U. adopted it since the Lorenz
machine is very close to the Model 15. There was a Teletype answerback
for the Model 28 and it used a very similar looking drum and coding
blades. But I'm not aware if Teletype had previously done anything
like that for the Model 15. TWX got by with the customer answering
through the keyboard.
