The Dartmouth system originally ran on a low-end G.E. mainframe computer
coupled with the G.E. Datanet-30 special-purpose communications computer.
There was a brief period when TTY switching systems based on paper tape
storage gave way to computer technology. The G.E. Datanet-30 was highly
regarded; there were also the Collins C-8400 system, the IBM 7740 and
7750, and a few others. These were followed by some other special-purpose
computers aimed specifically at communication with terminals, remote
job entry statons, and with other computers.
