Did not ITT own the Telex system of international
communication via teleprinter? ITT also eventually took
over the MacKay companies which included several undersea
cable companies. I am not sure of the connection of MacKay
with WU but I think they had control of it after the Postal
Telegraph merger. I have somewhere a copy of an internal RCA
report on international communications made shortly after
WW-2. I will have to look to see who sent it to me. Its
surprising just how many cables were operating. RCA was
easily the largest player in the radio link business with
some fifty circuits to other countries. Communication
satellites changed all this and now fiber optic cables have
changed it again.
