Hi Gerry:

I'm reading patent 1979510 <http://www.google.com/patents/US1979510> Telegraphic Printing Mechanism which is very close 
to the mechanism I have.
That patent and one of the earlier ones show two rack bars, but this mechanism uses a single rack and what I'm calling a 
wobble plate to increment the carriage one letter every time a letter gets printed.  See Fig 10 for the wobble plate and 
single rack bar.

I expect the motor keeps gears spinning on the left, but only when the type wheel is in position and a letter is printed 
does the carriage advance.

Can you tell me what it says on the motor ID plate?  RPM and direction of rotation?
