Automobile engine oil has a lot of additives in it for
various purposes that may not be desirable for a general
purpose lubricant. Highly refined petroleum based oil can
be gotten from Nye lubricants, do a web search for them.
Nye sells lubricants which vary from watch oil up to very
viscous damping oils. STP, mentioned in another post,
contains 50 weight oil with viscosity enhancers, mainly
zinc. It forms a sort of extreme pressure lubricant with
motor oil. I have no idea if this is desirable for this
application.
Three-in-One oil, in the BLUE can is 20 weight
paraffinic machine oil and is suitable for general use. Do
not use the RED can stuff, its a mixture of solvent and
naphthenic oil which is not a very good lubricant. Its
meant mostly for getting stuff unstuck.
