Bill Buzbee stopped work on Heavy Metal a long time ago.
There is a version 2.6 out there, and then a version 3.x is being
done by Javier Albinarrate javier at albinarrate.com

You can also use the mmtty program to drive the RS-232 port with TTY
signals, since it supports using the FSK input that many transceivers 
have.

There is a very old program named rtty12g that you can still find on the
web - google for it - written in BASIC so you can run the binary or fiddle
with the source.
