Well, I have to say that I have had at least one and
usually two or three cats who hang around my back yard for
around twenty-five years and still have a wide variety of
other creatures there including probably field mice, skunks,
an occasional possum and lots of squirrels. Also, birds
around here dive bomb and otherwise harass cats, I've seen
them chase a cat until it crawled under the fence into the
next yard. Its possible that I have wimp cats but there must
be a lot of them around.
In the past I've had a couple of good mousers; one was a
tom cat who used to bring me presents of late-night snacks
which he left in my bed. Well, he meant well.
I have not found any sort of really satisfactory
mouse/rat trap. Mice and rats are rather intelligent
creatures and usually can manage to get the bait out of
conventional spring traps without being caught. I simply
won't deal with the sticky traps, they are cruel and when
they catch something I have to kill it. Animals which have
been poisoned tend to find somewhere to die and then smell
and must be disposed of. As inefficient as a cat is one is
probably better than any of the above plus they can be good
company. Do you suppose a cat can work a Teletype?
