Has the price of regular solder gone way up in the last couple of years ?
I used to get it for less than $ 10 per pound. I did a search today and it seems that it is $ 25 to $ 50 per pound now at several suppliers. I have Digi-Key up and unless I am missing something regular 60/40 Kester is going for those prices.
If that is correct, then the $ 54 is cheap for 5 pounds.
I have seen some of the 'special' solder on e-bay go for those very high prices because of the place it was made.
Those audio people do seem to want to do some odd things. Such as pay $ 100 or more for a 6 foot long 'oxygen free' cable to go from the equipment to the wall outlet.

The problem with audiophools is that they are so easily gulled. I have heard of a situation (maybe someone here told the story) that some audiophool after spending around 10K USD on gold plated outlets for his "audio auditioning room", then called the electric utility and demanded that they remove the buried aluminum drop from the transformer and replace it with copper to "preserve the purity of the electrons" coming to his house.
It would be funny, except that those audiophools with more dollars than sense have been responsible for the destruction of god only knows how much WECO telephone switch gear in their lust for 80 year old oil caps and load coils. As far as 60 / 40 rosin core goes, $54.00 for five lbs??? That is insane. I have numerous rolls of the stuff in different gauges.
Best,
Joe
