Hi All,
I have had my first real success playing Teletype tech... I have a model 28 TD (frame serial # 17156; frame designation (mtg. & cover) 28-H40; and transmitter LXD-4, 28H).
When I received this particular unit, it was in good shape. I cleaned it and tightened the terminal screws and put in in the loop. It transmitted nonsense. Then I realized that it was not running at 60 WPM. So it sat on my bench and looked interesting.
Fast forward about a year, and K0TTY found a set of 60 WPM gears for me. With nervous trepidation, I set about the task of changing the gears. The first thing I did was find some magnetic tape, and taped it to my desk. This was to put each screw and washer on in order that I removed it. Then took the motor off, and carefully removed the bearing pillow block that goes into the mechanical part (the 'doomafloppy that the large speed gear goes onto). I removed the gear from that and put the larger 60 WPM gear on and replaced the bearing block. Next was the motor gear. Got it on the (in the right direction, I might add) the motor shaft, got the motor remounted, put the grease splash catcher back on, and made sure everything was tightened. Once the cover was on, I turned on the unit, and it worked. (I made sure it was freely turning before powering it on.)
Next I put it back in the loop, had a bit of tape with a couple of foxes and nbrs on it, and ran it into my ASR.
IT WORKED!
I turned it off right away, because I have no grease for the new gears. BTW, is sticky red grease OK for nylon gear sets?
I will get it lubricated this evening, and it will be off and running!
Gee, I feel like I am becoming a real TTY collector... :-)
Best,
Joe
