Thanks, Jim. It's now a matter of my own curiosity.

I have Herbert's Telegraphy 1906 edition which doesn't have the diagram. 
Too early - predates Morton & Krumm's work on start-stop telegraphs, I 
think. It has an appendix on the Murray multiplex system though.

Which edition of Herbert is yours?
