Don,

I have found the exact same thing, the ribbon spools are just a little thicker than they should be.  

The ribbons dated 77 may be dried out and usless.  Perhaps Jay could test one to see?

I have used these ribbons successfully from neximaging and another supplier, however the ribbons I have received were on plastic spools.  There seems to be a problem as these spools do not always latch to the pins that keep the ribbon turning correctly.  I now save all of my metal spools and transfer the ribbons from the plastic to the metal spools.

has Okidata compatable spool ribbons #52100701 for $1.69 ea in boxes of 6. These will work on any 28 and prob'ly many other printers that use spool ribbons. They have the eyelets. 
I got two of these from Staples, cost me around $8-$10 each. I only got two. That was awhile back. They don't carry them anymore.

Looks more like Typewriter type ribbons has a list of stuff that they go to.  Probably have 6-8 dozen.  I'm in Spokane but think I can get them to Seattle area.  Free if anyone can use them.  DAted 6 77 and in sealed plastic.

Shipping of course would be at your expense.
