Looking at the  SMECC Journalism library  shelf here at the  museum  I 
spy....
 
AP: The Story of News    -  Grambling, Oliver - 1940 - 506 pages with 
Index. Illustrated with  drawings
 
devoid of TTY references  but  a great early detailed   history of AP
