Gentlemen,
I will admit to getting several good chuckles from this thread. First, if you really want to see how frustrated people can be, just QRZ another Wisconsin ham, W9XZ. Last week I had a discussion with a group who are learning how to adapt ham radio to the National Incident Management System and when the topic of digital communications came up they knew only of D-star and Pactor. I foolishly asked why they didn't include PSK-31 (I knew better than to rock the boat with RTTY) and I was promptly informed that the only people who used that mode were over 70. Since I am 73 I felt I should say no more!
I do have eight or nine machines and none newer than both 28 ASR and KSR and those two are always ready for instant demonstration to benefit visitors to my shack. I am always ready to be amused by the almost automatic conclusion that given my age and my possession of 14, 15, 19, and 26 machines I must just be some goofy old guy living in the past. There is always some indication of shock when these people find out that I have Flex5000A and 3000 rigs and a SDR-IQ and that all radios (TS-480SAT, D-700, 746) are connected to individual computers and only the old Yaesu third back up rig is not. I don't think I'm living in the past but, rather, just love complex old mechanical things that click, chink, thunk and smell like oil.
Two days ago I volunteered to animate a political parade float "with an original complex clockwork mechanism." Yes, I was raised on tinker toys and erector sets and several CAD programs do reside on the machine I'm using to write this!

Larry,
I made the pilgramage to Dayton for the 2011 hamfest. There was a forum
and talk about RTTY contests, so I was really jazzed to be able to attend.
The room was PACKED...at least 200 people. I was thinking "wow, I'm not
the only RTTY enthusiast here".
The then talk started.... First slide showed a model 19 and the speaker starts
talking about the "bad old days of noisy contraptions". Went down hill from
there. Chatted with a couple old timers after the forum and got seriously
strange looks when I asked if they were using mechanical TTY machines.
Its computers talking to computers. Why don't they just do packet?!
The same is true for CW.... Very sad IMO.
