You are probably talking about their use of the fine-thread series of
bolts and nuts, 6-40 and 8-36 for example.  These are standard but
uncommonly used.  When used in adjustable places they give a finer
range of adjustment.  When used in thin metal they hold better, are
less likely to strip the threads.
