[GreenKeys] Model 28 Paper Feed

Richard,

There are two types of winders that were used on the M28... one is the
older model first used on the 15 and 19. It mounts on a right angle
bracket that is attached to the back of the 28 cabinet. The clutch is
a primitive unit that uses a composite material that is greased from
time to time and the paper is routed under a rod that positions the
paper to wind properly onto the winder spindle. Normally these
winders are held in place by two thumb screws that can be loosened and
the winder can be moved horizontally.

The LPW300 winder when painted green was used on the M28 with a
bracket designed for the 28 cabinet. When painted gray it was used on
the M33 and M35 machines, each machine has it's own mounting bracket.
This winder has a copy display rack that allows the paper to be
displayed above the winder before it goes under the actuating arm and
around the spindle. This winder uses a vial of mercury to energize the
motor when the paper needs to be wound. It is more erratic than the
M15 winder.

I have the installation manual for the newer LPW300 winder that I can
scan and send to you if that is the one you have. Can you tell me
which winder you have or send me an image?

Best,
Don K9TTY

We use a 28ASR at the KSM receive site to copy RTTY being sent from
the transmitter site so visitors can see a real Teletype machine in
action. We have a paper winder on the machine generously donated by a
list member. But there's a problem.

As the winder takes up the paper it's displaced slightly to the left
(looking at the machine when standing in front of it) so that the
paper contacts the left flange of the winder spool and becomes folded
and ripped.

The mounting holes in the M28 case and the winder do not provide for
any lateral adjustment. I believe I am routing the paper through the
machine correctly. Does that mean that the typing unit needs to be
moved laterally? Or am I, as usual, missing something obvious?
