Teletype chat existed in many forms.

There was Order Wire

There were Western Union "Tie Lines"

There were point to point circuits

There were Radio Teletype Nets

All of these permitted chatter in real-time, with one or more parties
being on the same line/circuit at the same time.

Some "chats" were during lulls in traffic periods. Others were for
coordination or circuit restorals. Still others were for very specific
functions or Special Purpose communications (in real time).

To tell that a chat session or QSO was over, usually folks signed
off with any number of prosigns: NNNN, AR or SK, or simply BI BI 
(bye bye), CUL (See You Later), BTT (Back To Traffic), etc.
