David,
Many years ago, when VOA ran the RTTY schedules from Greenville,
two way full duplex TTY, depending on the operators, sometimes we'd
chit chat, especially if the operator on the other end was someone we
knew or had met.
The beauty of full duplex, of course, is that we did not have to wait
for the other person to finish their side, as we could respond to
portions while they continued to type.
If we weren't running either traffic or chatting, we'd keep the circuits
busy with RYs, well sort of. We had an RY generator which would
generate an R, then a number of letter shifts, then a Y, letter shifts,
and gosh, I hadn't thought about this in about 25 years, maybe it
would fill up the line and then a CR LF LF and start the sequence
again. I think there might have been some location identifiers
involved, but I just don't remember the full line message.
This way, we kept the circuit busy but didn't spill out pages of
RYs on the print copy.
