Hi,
I am not really surprised with the replies I got here. I'm not a hard
core contester, either. I was hoping that getting involved with an
on-air event like a contest would yield some ragchew opportunities
(maybe late in the contest) besides a chance to see if the equipment is
all still working.
I got interested in RTTY about the time "glass" was getting popular. I
had a hardware machine but I never got it on the air as I was able to
get on via those other means first. In fact, somebody from "greenkeys"
ended up with the teletype machine, a TU, and a few rolls of paper. I
don't remember who it was but "you're welcome". While I was going
through all the things I would need to do to operate I learned about
delays at LF/CR CR, etc. At the time there were some stations
experiencing difficulty due to 170 Hz v 200 Hz shifts, etc. I don't know
how that shook out but I can do either. The best I know, my software is
setup to accommodate hardware RTTY ops...even if I forget to do CR/LF
the software will do it on my behalf.
I'll probably work a few in the contest. I've been able to park in front
of the radios or listen while I work on other things. Once in a rare
while I hear somebody on RTTY (I dunno if it's glass or iron) but they
usually QRT before I can get up on frequency. I'll look for some more of
that and try some CQ calls of my own.

Bill KU8H
