Hi Joe,
I think you are writing about a Model 15 in the mailbox cabinet. The
type of cabinet was designed to be able to sit right next to another
machine on both sides.
The drawer and supporting table are designed so that just about
everything can be pulled straight out. Same with the rubber wheel.
With the machines next to each other you do not have access to the
crank to advance the paper. You may also notice a cutout on the side
near the back. That is for wiring to be able to go from one machine
to another. I donated one of these machines in black wrinkle to the
Museum of Communications in Seattle.
As far as painting goes... many companies such as the Navy, Bell
System and Western Union used this type of machine so you could paint
it black, or Bell System green or Western Union green. Rustoleum
makes a series of spray paint for painting camouflage... one of the
greens is really close to Western Union green and the finish is flat
so it matches nicely. I used the paint on the machine I restored for
the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (they still cannot seem to get it to
print, but that is another story) and also a Western Union "Green"
perforator, aka "Iron Horse" both turned out well.
Best,
Don
P.S. What is a Rokumon?

Hi,
I have an old (heck, all TTYs are old now, I guess) WU model 19 TTY
that is in a "mailbox" case with the rubberized paper advance wheel
rather than a crank. Jack K0TTY looked at it and adjusted it so that
it prints perfectly, and I scrubbed the case using elbow grease and a
pressure washer.
I do have three questions about this unit.
First, the case still looks like garbage. It is a nasty off green with
wrinkle finish, with highlights of 60 years of grease and nicotine. I
am considering painting it, but hesitate doing so because I do not
know what the proper color would be or where to get the wrinkle finish.
Second, the TTY unit itself sits on a 'drawer' type of affair, and
there are places on each corner of the frame to bolt it down to the
drawer. Does anyone know what type of bolt I should use, or should I
just go to the hardware store and find something that works?
Lastly, there is a large white lens indicator light, as well as a
little jeweled red lens indicator lamp, both with no lamp bases behind
them. Does anyone know what those were (are) for, what type of lamp
bases to look for and where to wire them up? One is labeled "printer
tied up". The other is not labeled.
Thank you in advance!
Joe
