     Great story, and it sounds like I wish I'd been there!.

     I'm going to speculate that the appeal of such machines these days 
is that they have /moving parts you can see!/  That is a rarity in 
machinery these days (and I myself remember being fascinated by the FSK 
warble and how it could be resolved into printed type mechanically).

     Did you run it with the case off, I wonder?
