Nick,

The machines other than those used my the military were normally
supplied with at least two tape handling accessories.

1. the Unwinder... a device that looks like a round basket balanced on
a needle bearing. the support base has a circular shaped wire that
the tape is threaded through and up to the reader. Some of them had
magnets on the base to stick on the base of the 19 or 28 ASR. The 35
machines had a bracket that bolted to the left leg of the machine to
support the unwinder.

2. the Winder... several different models. some were spring motor
driven and others were electric motor driven under control of an arm
with a microswitch.

On larger machines such as high speed tape punches the device was
known as a Reeling Machine. You have similar arrangement in your M28
RT Set. The reeling machine differed from winders in that most of
them were driven on the outer edge of the large 18" reel. The winders
normally used plastic reels that come apart when twisted to remove the
tape for use in an unwinder.

I will send the Nadcomm list a couple of images for your interest. I
have a couple of winders here but so far have not found any
unwinders. I left them at the museum in San Diego.

Best,
Don
