[GreenKeys] Bell Labs - True Innovation

It's very different. I was at Whippany when divestiture was taking place.
Whippany was more development and a lot of military work; Safeguard. SOSUS
and the like. The other big labs in NJ were mostly commercial and pie in
the sky labs. Corporate used to send money to them in truckloads. It was
pretty good for what would now be called geeks. Not only were the tools and
equipment available, but you were expected to spend a good bit of your time
just exploring avenues of interest. If you wanted a couple pounds of
platinum or gold or something that would explode, you might have to go up a
couple levels of management but otherwise BTL would pretty much make
whatever you wanted available.
I remember that at the time a lot of the people working at the other labs
used to turn up their noses at those of us doing military work at Whippany -
not everyone but a lot. When the money started drying up around 83, the
very same people were haunting the halls at Whippany looking for work from
us. It was really quite sad and a major loss to American scientific
innovation.
