That's what I would assume, but I haven't powered my M43 up to
confirm. I would connect it to a PC's serial port instead of another
M43 just to eliminate one of the vintage factors from the equation.

Yeah, you're going to need to fake out a phone system for that thing
to talk over the phone jack. It has an internal modem so you need to
send the modem the carrier tones and whatnot for it to respond.

Beyond what's in the manuals you mention I don't have any additional
information to answer your questions. I haven't powered mine up.

If the printhead is operating you should hear it, since it's a dot matrix
printhead. If you don't hear anything that sounds like a dot matrix
printer, then your printhead is the problem. If it sounds like a dot
matrix printer but you don't see anything on the paper, try placing a
piece of carbon paper and another sheet of paper in front of your
existing paper. Then make it do something. The dot matrix printhead
should be strong enough to make an impression against the back layer
of paper from the carbon paper. If you still don't see anything, then
I would suspect your print head. If you see something from the carbon
paper, then I would suspect the ribbon. If your ribbon is original to
the equipment, it is almost certainly dried out.
