In the case of the worn-out PVC tube, the divot causes the hammer pad to make no impression on the character, but there is no damage to the drum because the rest of the pvc tube is still intact. It's still the best replacement solution even if one has to replace a tube piece every so often. The entire tube might cost $5, you'd get 15 usable pieces from it.

Well, from experience, I can tell you:
If that rubber wears out and the metal hammer hits the type drum,
ou won't believe how fast it will be rendered useless.

Hey all....I noticed that the PVC tube I used to replace the rubber
print hammer head of my Teletype ASR 33 about this time last year
developed a divot where it makes contact with the print cylinder.
