Quite possibly the error came from the armature which I removed and cleaned (this is the thing that moves up and down in a fine clicking motion with a coil magnet above it that forces it up). At the end of the armature is a blade - I wiped it clean of oil...probably not helpful having oil on a contact. The fact that the armature was so easy to remove (one set screw and removal of the spring) got me to thinking that it was something that needed checking on occasion?? Still, I do not know why it should work when started from cold then end up printing garbage as it warmed. It could be that this was just a coincidence as, to be honest, I had only run it a couple times previous and I didn't have a full history of this happening. When I fired it up the garbage letters came again, I adjusted the motor, and bingo it just started printing fantastically!
So with a new sense of optimism (and the TTY well warmed up too) I loaded up a text file containing Banjo Paterson's "Clancy of the Overflow" (a famous 19th century Australian verse) and she printed the whole thing out in full - 13 paragraphs each containing 8 lines of solid text, with no errors at all. That's well over two pages in A4 speak and seemingly ten minutes of continuous printing. The only thing I noticed was that one line was a little too long and it struggled to fit in the last character - but I'll take that as a win anyday!
But, of course, I may be wrong and a new day may bring a new challenge...any thoughts about other possible causes will be appreciated.
Greg.
